The Perdigueiro Portuguese a short history

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PORTUGUESE POINTING DOG.
His remote origins are somewhat cloudy,it is thought however that he came from the Orient to the Iberian peninsula in XIVth century. It could be assumed that ,with the intervening years and various influences some of the mutations suffered in such a way that, they individualize the Portuguese Pointing dog.A well defined dog in both morphology and in phychological charateristics. He has always been a highly prized dog by all classes where shooting is a favourite sport in both town and country. He was originaly known as the Podengo de Mosta[sighning hound]and showing the possability of pointing game was bred in the royal kennels and of nobility.the Portuguese Pointing dog can be found scattered all over the continental areas of Portugal. It is thought in the XVIIIth century the british soldiers in Oporto brought many specimins of this old breed back to England where they formed part of the English Pointer. In the XXth century after a sharp decline in numbers breeders made an effort to bring the breed back to the fore with pure bred dogs from the north of Portugal. The stud book was set in 1932 and the breed standard in 1938.
